Care guide
Pinguicula
As of now we primarily sell Mexican Pinguicula. They go in a "dormancy" state during the winter and in a carnivorous state during the summer. There is a lot a variety and they can hybridize quite easily.
Substrate
At The Bestiole Lounge we use a inorganic substate composed of 2 parts of perlite, vermiculite and 1 part of fine sand, pouzzolane, aqualit. However many substrate will work well depending on your growing condition. You need to make sure that there's no fertilizer.
Water
Like other carnivorous plants you will need to use pure water here's what will be best: rain water, reverse osmosis water, distilled water. Here we use zerowater filters. In their carnivorous state make sure the substate is always moist but not soggy. In their "dormancy" state you can let the substate completly dry for a while before watering them again.
Lighting
Pinguiculas need a lot of light to show their colors, we use artificial light at around 8 inches from the plants.
Disease
Pinguicula are prone to the browning heart disease and crown rot. Make sure to never wet the crown, watering from the bottom of the pot and to have good ventilation.
Cephalotus
Cephalotus are a beautiful carnivorous plant from Australia. In bright light they'll show red to purple color. Their roots are quite long and don't like to be disturbed.
Substrate
Many substate will work well for cephalotus but the best we tried is 3 parts quartz sand and 1 part peat. Make sure that there's no fertilizer in the substate.
Water
Like other carnivorous plants you will need to use pure water here's what will be best: rain water, reverse osmosis water, distilled water. Here we use zerowater filters. Never let the substate dry out completely, keep it moist but not soggy.
Lighting
They need a lot of light to show their colors, we use artificial light at around 8 inches from the plants. With lower light intensity the plant will produce more non carnivorous leaves.
Disease
Cephalotus are prone to root rot to reduce the chance of getting it, water from the bottom of the pot and let it dry before watering it again.
